Going Out On A Song

Should the world end today, I’ll be singing this song.

Try keep up now.

That’s great,

it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane -
Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn -
world serves its own needs, regardless of your own needs. Feed it up a knock,
speed, grunt no, strength no.

Ladder structure clatter with fear of height,
down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven maes in a government for
hire and a combat site.

Left her, wasn’t coming in a hurry with the furies
breathing down your neck.

Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered
crop.

Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population,
common group, but it’ll do.

Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its
own needs, listen to your heart bleed.

Tell me with the rapture and the
reverent in the right – right.

You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright
light, feeling pretty psyched.

It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o’clock – TV hour. Don’t get caught in foreign tower.

Slash and burn,
return, listen to yourself churn.

Lock him in uniform and book burning,
blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.

Light a candle,
light a motive. Step down, step down.

Watch a heel crush, crush. Uh oh,
this means no fear – cavalier.

Renegade and steer clear! A tournament,
a tournament, a tournament of lies.

Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives
and I decline.

It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I tripped a nice continental drift divide.

Mount St. Edelite.
Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Breshnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom!

You symbiotic, patriotic,
slam, but neck, right? Right.

It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine…fine…

(It’s time I had some time alone)

I’d say plenty of people will be singing it.

and that’s a good thing, cos that’s 80s REM… a band who were better than the Beatles.

  2. The Bad Ambassador Says:

    Great song!

Sadly, they rarely close with it now – preferring “Man On The Moon” instead.

    COOOO-EELLLLLLLLLL!

  3. Darren Says:

Very cool! And what a way to go out smiling…

  4. NaRocRoc Says:

B’Dum you crazy. But at least we all survived. For now!

  5. B'dum Says:

    REM(82-96)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The Beatles

  6. Lottie Says:

Any excuse really – I think it’s one of if not my favourite R.E.M song. Has the world ended yet?

  7. B'dum Says:

my favourite rem song: country feedback

    or electrolite

    …or radio free europe

or harborcoat, nightswimming, e-bow the letter, driver 8, gardening at night, pretty persuasion… i’ll stop.

  8. Lottie Says:

Oh – B’dum – Nightswimming it is for me too. Forgot about that one.

  9. Andrew Says:

Oh that’s what they’re singing? Cheers Liz. Can’t help but suspect that it’s just one fan’s interpretation of the lyrics rather than the official ones though. REM never used to print the words to their songs on album sleeves.

B’dum – Jaysus I’d never considered early REM to be better than the Beatles but it is a highly arguable assertion.

My top ten REM (in no particular order.

    Electrolite
    Wolves, Lower
    What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?
Country Feedback (my favourite on 99 out of 100 days)
    Gardening at Night
It’s the End of the World…
    Camera
    Radio Free Europe
    E-Bow the Letter
    Shiny Happy Monsters

  10. The week that was… « The Narocroc Weblog Says:

[...] week also saw B’Dum make the outrageously blasphemous claim that REM are greater than the Beatles. Pure madness form the Longford Leader. At least Darren is [...]
