Irish Rail Redefine the English Language
Posted in Rants by: LottieJanuary 6th, 2009

Definition of Reliable:-
- The probability of performing a specified function without failure under given conditions for a specified period of time.
- Probability that a system will not fail
- May be relied on; dependable in achievement, accuracy, honesty
- Giving the same result on successive trials (although this final definition may apply – I can pretty much depend that my train in the evenings will always be late)
Punctuality:-
- Strict observance in keeping engagements; promptness.
- Precise; exact.
At no point is “punctual” qualified in any dictionary as “no later than 10 minutes after scheduled time”.
And surely if they only achieve 94.48% “punctuality”, “reliability” and “punctuality” should go hand in hand.
Oh and they just raised their prices. Again.

clearly, they aren’t German trains…
we have the same problem here
it appears that they prefer to just change the times for “punctuality” in order to have better numbers

I LOVE these posters.
Where do they do their surveying? And who do they ask during the “Customer Satisfaction” surveys? Probably the 4 teaboys in Head Office.
It takes a big bag of balls to produce this kind of PR exercise. And for that, and only that, I take my hat off to Iarnrod Eireann.

I couldn’t agree with you more.
It’s really unbelieveable at the moment. Yesterday my train was twenty five minutes late pulling into pearse even though it left at 7:42 on the dot from drogheda. Not one announcement was made. no sorry for the delay not even a message saying this train is running late.
I think they’ve gone past even acknowledging that their service is complete crap at this stage.

They are reliable!!!
Reliably late, reliably inefficient, reliably rude, reliably breaking down when you most need to be somewhere at a specific time…

They could say percentage of trains to arrive within three hours of scheduled time and get 100%.
And what does “ran as planned” mean? Please explain I.E.!! Does it mean the train departed with the engine at the front and arrived in the same configuration? Does it mean the train kept going in a forward direction at all times and remained the same colour livery all the way?

Iarnroid Eireann fail epically. That particular view of them will not change until they open up the Dunboyne rail link.
If I’m still commuting to college by then, I’ll probably praise them.
If the service is regular.
And quick.
And cheap.

Can I say horseshit here?
Seriously dreadful manipulation of statistics with no use to a commuter whatsoever, bless em.
