How Many Units Do you Consume?

Posted in Blog  by: Lottie

Following on from the comments and responces to this post I am hiring an electrician to check out the meter at home. I am re-blogging a comment. Now I know that that has to be a major blog fox paw but it’s about time I got to the bottom of this.

@ most of you – So I rang the ESB again. They have told me to get an electrician to come out and if there does appear to be a fault with the meter that we have to get an electricians cert and then the ESB will come out and repair it and reimburse us for the cost of the electrician.

I am trying to get someone to look at it next weekend. In the meantime I will do that test again to turn off everything at the mains (Jo the mama’s idea) and see if the meter is still running.

The bill is telling us we used 1973 units of power in two months – so it seems very high.

Would people mind letter me know what their unit usage/premises size is for a similar period?

The Big Switch

switchOur latest ESB bill arrived this morning and I do love getting mail so I tore open the envelope like a child on Christmas morning. The ensuing feeling could only be compared to that of a parent who awakes on that Christmas morning to find that  the house has been robbed.

Our ESB bill for the period of 18th December to 20th February is €342 flat (€42 of which are arrears).   That is the highest it has been yet, usually coming in around the €240 mark.

I’ve said before, we live in a small two bed-room apartment.

We are rarely here during the day and the majority of our power is consumed between 7pm and midnight. We don’t own a tumble drier. I put on the washing machine no more than twice a week. However there are two laptops running most evening, we have the emersion on for a few hours early in the morning and the bedroom heater runs for three hours over the late evening/early morning.

Out of interest I went down to our meter room. For some reason our meter is oscillating at approximately 4 times the speed of any of the others despite there not being a thing turned on in the apartment. I have reported a fault previously. I have went to the ESB on my hands and knees asking that they check it out because this high usage just doesn’t make sense. I have recorded our use and it doesn’t add up.  According to our bill (which is not an estimate) we have used 100 day units and 100 night units in 4 days. Does that make sense to anyone? Clearly there is some questions over unit usage an issue which I am going to continue to investate.

However,Bord Gais announced their entrance into the electricity market last week and  today I begin The Big Switch. They promise a 10-14% decrease in the amount of a bill so it’s worth a try. It all seems relatively straight-forward. The application is available online. The forms are very well laid out and easy to navigate.

To change over you will need your ESB bill with your MPRN number and you have an opportunity to submit a meter reading if you wish to do so. The whole application process has taken no more than 10 minutes.

PS: There is an additional 2% discount if you set up a Direct Debit however I want to give it a few months to see the size of the bills. They are still a semi-state body after all.

I have also chosen not to waive the cooling off period and the change over should take effect within 20 days.

Are you making The Big Switch?

All that is gold does not glitter

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;

The old that is strong does not wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

It’s astounding how much money I spent this weekend.  Shall I tell you? Almost €600 including the Hotel. How, I don’t know.

Payday is still only a blip on the horizon, I just received a letter from the bank informing my that I should pay off my overdraft to “avoid embarrassing consequences” and my ATM card is for little more than decoration.

But bi-curious-George I’ve got it.  I have decided to take a leaf from our leaders and financial institutions and apply some artistic invention to my finances.  A little monetary dressing-up shall we say.  A non-payment of car tax here, a false rebate form there. I may just Photoshop the fuck out of my bank statement.  Then with the power of positive thinking and a little panache I can afford another night on the town and that necklace I have been eyeing up.

If I think it, so it will be.  I’m fairly certain that the Tax-Man will stand behind my creativity and give me a a bit of the blind eye if not a full government endorsement and a slap on the back.

Any tips Sean?

It is important to note that one should never attempt to record a video while standing in such close proximity of Giant Bouncy Twister. My attacker was either Ellybabes or Maybury. Witness statements can be left below.

Licking My Wounds(alt title:Peter Gabriel Too)

February 22nd, 2009

The morning after the night and dawn before, I sit hidden from the hangers-on, head phones in, Zach and Norah running through my mind.  The Internet’s Ben Keneally lies across a couch twittering and farting to his hung-over heart’s content.  Darragh Doyle’s enthusiasm rings out from somewhere beneath me. I curse his sobriety then remember that he had the sense not to partake in a bottle of Jack at 5.30am.  I can see Blog Flight 101 take off as the Twitters keep coming and imagine the headline now: “Bloggers Bring  Down Boeing”. Occasionaly I reluctantly rise my lumpish form to bid farewell to bedraggled bodies hitting the road.  I am licking my wounds and avoiding my bruised arse. Three words – Giant. Inflatable. Twister.

My first Bloggies rocked!  Alas, I did not win but I don’t feel so bad though as the cause of the ginger was well represented, Tommy taking home the prize for Best Newcomer.

Thank you to everyone who was so wonderfully nice.  Thanks to the quirky, cosy Cork International Airport Hotel.  Thank you to Mulley and everyone who organised the weekend, I am already looking forward to next year.  My favourite people of the moment are the truly very sexy Sexy Pedestrian, my kindred-hair spirit Sabrina and Elf, who has kindly offered to let me bunk on her sofa when I visit Amsterdam.

And so I take my leave of you.  There will be some intermittent interruptions over the next few weeks while I prepare for exams  and on Grannymar’s advice I will  only post or read when I have earned it. One hour of study equals one blog read.

It won’t last.

Pay Day Delights #4

New York was my delight for December and a pretty new lap top for January. Oh yes, my overdraft knows no recession.

February’s Pay Day Delight comes a little early, but it’s non-the-less exciting.

Bell x1’s new album Blue Lights on the Runway is released today and the band will by in HMV on Grafton Street at 6pm. I’ll be picking up my copy, the proper shop bought way this morning and if all goes well today I will be top of the queue to lick Paul Noonan. Mmm tasty.

Note: This is why you should never allow someone on the “no strings” list if there’s a chance you might bump into them on Grafton Street.

How to Lose Friends & Bore Me to Tears

lose-friendsHow to Lose Friends and Alienate People I hear you ask?

Make a movie like this. Shame on you Simon. Shame  shame shame!

It gets one kiss because Gillian Anderson looks great, there is one funny moment, I want to give Simon Pegg the benefit of the doubt and I turned it off half an hour from the end so there’s a slim chance that it may have gotten better.

I doubt it though.
