For the 5th challenge, we want you turn your attentions to Sydney culture and nightlife. Your task is to run your very own Sydney-themed event.. The type of event is entirely up to you – a Sydney-themed dinner party for your friends, or perhaps a night at the opera…(Sydney drinking isn’t a valid topic!).

The Fifth challenge to win the Awesome Tour of Sydney took place last week and after some great suggestions I ended up using Will’s idea of the Strictly Ballroom themed party.

The call went out for Bloggers,  Twitterers and Internet heads alike to don their best waltzing gear and head to Mount Merrion and I must say everyone looked marvelous.

The Penultimate Challenge

To have a party. Yes, seriously, that is it. An actual party with actual cash monies. The 5th Awesome Tour of Sydney challenge focuses on Sydney culture and nightlife, each contender must throw a  Sydney-themed event. It can be any type of event but a Sydney drinking isn’t a valid topic unfortunately.

The deadline is tight, Tuesday 14th September being the last day for submissions. So once again, I need your help. Beach Volleyball in the rain?  Sydney-food themed dinner party? A Pool party?

Sydney Challenge – #4 – CrOZ Breeding

Posted in Blog, NSW  by: Lottie
August 31st, 2009

This week we are looking at Sydney Wildlife. We want you to take inspiration from the various animals that can be found in and around Sydney, and create your own Australian creature – whether it be a mash-up of existing animals (platypus, koala, wombat, emu– there’s plenty to choose from!) or a completely new species.

This is the weird and wonderful world of crOZbreeding. Thank you all for your bizarre but fantasic suggestions over the past week.In the end it was  Ms. Keogh’s DidgereRoo that was fed into the test tube and committed to immortality.

So what is the DidgereRoo I hear the masses exclaim. Well, it’s quite simple, the DidgereRoo is a rare musical marsupial creature which plays hypnotic music from it’s throat through a vestigial Didgeridoo. The hypnosis is used to stun it’s prey which is actually a pretty useless technique as they are herbivores.

The off-spring of the DidgereRoo, which can be seen in the above sketch are called Youngerangs. They have, much like the Irish male, a habit of returning home to the Mammy at the slightest sign of trouble.

As always, the medium in which you deliver your entry is up to you, and you’ll be judged on creativity, community involvement and use of the resources available to you.

Here are some of the suggestions so far:

@sineaedkeogh has come up with the DidgereRoo – The marsupial creature which plays hypnotic music from it’s throat. The off-spring of the DidgereRoo are called Youngerangs. They have, much like the Irish male, a habit of returning home to the Mammy at the slightest sign of trouble.

Sinead also suggested the Tazmanian Trible, the Springbokadile

Rick thought a Duck Billed Flatypus, the flattest animal in the world. Just how flat is flat?

Darren had the Kanga-Dingo and the Wala-Bee.

Sharon & her lovely man sent me a list of potentials this morning:

A Wana-be : small furred marsupial who hides amongst other animals by disguising itself with twigs, leaves and berry juice (to fake markings on it’s fur)

There are 3 schools of thought on the Wana-be; some feel the animal has been extinct for centuries, others believe it has become so adept at disguising itself that humans simply can’t tell a wana-be from the animal it has chosen to imitate. others believe the wana-be fossils are merely pranks by the students at Sydney uni with clay, paper clips, toilet roll inserts and far too much time on their hands.

A shock-odile : born of the unlikely union between a crocodile and an electric eel. It is important for outback backpackers to note these animals, when prodded with a dry stick they produce a spark which can be used to light a camp fire. These creatures rarely grow beyond 2ft long which is good as their electric shocks increase with size, but bad because they have been known to swim up pipes and get into toilets giving their unfortunate victims what is known as the ‘down-under burn’.

The Ram-a-lama-dingos : This unusual breed of outback hunting dogs has been known to lure it’s prey of small mammals into the open with a strangely harmonious howl described by zoologists as “funky”

What did I forget? Oh yes, the Kookoowallo Bear and the Kanga-Boo. Do you think animals believe in the afterlife?

I need lots more ideas and as for the execution of the challenge…I haven’t a clue. HELP!

Can anyone draw? (more…)

Sydney Challenge #3 – The Sky’s The Limit

The third challenge is themed around Sydney icons. We want to see you recreate a well-known building, monument or geographical feature, and have your photo taken in front of it.

How you go about making the icon is entirely up to you – we’re thinking about going down the mashed-potato Sydney Opera House avenue (seems perfectly sane to us)!

I thought about superimposing myself as the Digger on Anzac Bridge or taking center stage at the Opera House but then, inspiration, finally a use for the ridiculous amounts of make-up that clutters my bedroom, handbag and bathroom cupboards.

So I took this picture of the Sydney skyline…

and in the style of my make-up bag, created this…

Sydney Challenge #2 – Fashionably Late

I’m looking for a bit of a sympathy vote this week as I’ve been a very unwell bunny blogger and as a result tardy with this weeks challenge.

Sydney fashion is eclectic, there’s a little bit of everything on the streets. One of my favourite places to visit when I was there were the markets where you can find pretty much anything from trinket souvenirs to cut price couture.

As I have a wild love of dresses, I’ve come up with a pretty little number.  A blue satin dress that reveals a glimpse of the Sydney Opera House through the pleats as it moves.

I had planned to try my hand at making the dress but turns out sewing on the occasional button is the extent of my tailoring  skills.  Anyone else up to the challenge of a bit of dress making so that I might float around Bondi in one of my own designs?

Sydney Challenge – A Sporting Chance

Posted in Blog, NSW  by: Lottie
August 9th, 2009

Okay, so week one was a bit tough. I know nothing about sports, least of all cricket.

Thanks to everyone who attempted to explain the rules of the game to me and more so to @Irlbinky who actually created a whole new “spin” on 1000head’s version.

Ultimately I decided that an Aussie Rules (footy) game might be easier for me to get my head around.  So, after picking many brains,  it was Mr O’Shea’s suggestion that I thought would work best. When I was in Oz in 2002, I did get to see a game. It’ s much more fun that regular football stuff.  None of that falling around like ladies-who-lunch nonsense.

The pitch:

Aussie

You can print it out a sheet or just draw the oval and goals on a piece of paper with a line across the  centre.

You have to flick the coin (a la Subbuteo) into the goal.

Goal gets 6 points, little goal gets one, outside gets none.

It can just as easily be a drinking game, or, if you’re feeling a bit naughty, strip poker rules apply. For each goal you miss you lose an item. For each goal you make, you’re choice of opponent loses an item.

Now go play and I want proof.

Thanks to @irlbinky,@pluincee, Hugo, DarrenRick and everyone who helped & retweeted on Twitter. (more…)

Going Down Under: Week 1

August 5th, 2009

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away and  a dress two sizes smaller I happened by a stroke of luck to find myself working for a company who, for some bizarre reason, wanted to send me to work in Australia for a month. Easily excitable and perhaps a little naive, I hopped on a plan at the drop of a hat and found myself landing in Sydney without a clue and working with a group of strangers I’d never met before.

It wasn’t quite the free ride I had thought it would be. While I got to sample the night life of Sydney I worked day in and out to pay my way. However, I met the most amazing people who, even though they may not know it, played a role in my becoming who I am today. In all I had four Sundays in the City, nearly all of which were spent sitting on Circular  Quay listening to the jazz bands play. I know, I know, poor me and yes, that is the sound of the smallest violin in the world.

Despite all the work and little of the play, I fell in love with the City and have ranted about Sydney for almost the past 7 years and I now have the chance to go back and experience Sydney the way it should be seen. Therefore I am enlisting your help.

So as I mentioned, the wonderfully smart, funny, sexy, brilliant and kind people (that should do it) at  New South Wales Tourism and 1000 Heads want to send some of the blogging community to Sydney and over the next 6 weeks will be setting challenges ranging from sports to fashion to travel.

This weeks challenge revolves around sport, cricket to be specific, Aussie related sports to be less so.  The aim is to devise a game which incorporate different aspects of the sports. There are no limits and we are assured that creativity is rewarded.

Here’s one they made earlier:

“Sydney Cricket is a simple game you can play anywhere. All you need to get started is a coin and an idea of the rules, which can be altered to suit any situation.

If you have the chance to mock up a board that’s bonza, or if you just want to make use of beer mats, match sticks or anything else you can lay your hands on then that works too!”

Sydney-Cricket-1Sydney-Cricket-3Sydney Cricket – the 1000heads version

Players agree amongst themselves the number of overs that are to be played – each over giving the player six attempts at scoring ‘runs’ (much like real cricket). Once agreed, players take it in turns to spin their coin on the playing surface and attempt to score runs. The classic version uses the board below, with players spinning from the centre circle and scoring runs by landing their coin within the rings. If your coin finishes up off the board though, you’re out… Howzat!

NB: If a coin lands between two rings, an umpire’s decision must be sought on where the majority of the coin lies and runs awarded accordingly.

Variant 3 – Sydney Roulette

A new board is used, with ‘RUN’ on one half, and ‘OUT’ on the other. Each player takes turns to keep spinning for as many goes as they dare. You can declare with a score at any time, but if you land on ‘OUT’ you end up with nothing.

Variant 4 – Bar Edition

Not got a board, but want to play Sydney Cricket? Don’t worry – you can build a board at any time from what you find around you. Say you’re in a bar, why not create a boundary of beer mats? If you stay within the boundary, no runs, but you get another go. Outside the boundary, a run. If you touch the beer mat however, you’re out!

Get it?

Ultimately, on a night out in London after a long day in a bar, we settled on the Bar Edition of the game and we all know how that ends.

But now it’s my turn. I was thinking something along the lines of Boomerang Rugby involving a boomerang and variant on Tag-Rugby Rules but it seems a little hokey. Wicke’d Cricket, think Cricket/Rounders meets strip Poker.

I am thinking of the rules for the above ideas but suggestions are more than welcome.

The Tuesday after a Bank Holiday is always an uphill struggle of me. While I should be fully relaxed after a long weekend and  happy at thoughts of a short week ahead I’m more often than not exhausted from the high-jinx of a four day social binge and struggle to keep my head above water for the rest of the week.

This morning is no exception. Between Friday and the early hours of this morning there was family business, the boys birthday, an emotional cinema-thon and a trip London.

Bedraggled and somewhat dubious myself and fellow blogger McG, together with our trusty side-kicks headed off for London bright and early on Saturday morning to take part in the unknown. We were aware that there was a trip to Oz up for grabs and that…well that was about it. We had very little notion of how we would go about getting our eager little paws on said trip however a day in London and good slice of curiosity meant we were willing to see what it was all about.

To make a long story and a heavy hangover short, we met some lovely people, we drank, we ate, we talked and we all got a feel for the competition.

Because of the day that is in it (work commitments etc etc) I can’t say more but I wanted to whet your appetites before I disclose all in the coming days.

The most important thing to know is that New South Wales Tourism, STA and the lovely folk at 1000 Heads want to send some people to Oz to experience the delights of Sydney.

Over the next six weeks the competitors (that’s me) will be set a course of challenges and at the end of the rainbow there will be two tickets to Oz for the victorious blogger together with two tickets for a member of their “community” so audience participation is vital. I need your brains people.

The prize includes return flights to Sydney, 7 nights accommodation, a half day Bondi Surf Experience, Jet-boating, a Blue Mountain Day tour and a 1/2 day Bonza Bike session.

Once I have gathered my thoughts and unpacked my suitcase I will return with a fuller update so watch this space.
